Self care during self isolation

These are challenging times throughout the coronavirus pandemic. With the UK entering its third week of lockdown people are beginning to understand that staying at home isn’t just for the vulnerable and extremely vulnerable. It’s to protect us all.

It can be difficult staying sane when you’re spending all day every day in the house. Those with existing mental health issues can suffer more. The feeling of loneliness can become overwhelming which turns into a person feeling unsafe. No one wants their mental health to deteriorate in these testing times so I thought it’s a good idea to share some tips on how to keep busy and maintain (or even start) self-care during self-isolation.

Why is self-care important?

Self-care is looking after yourself, it doesn’t necessarily mean a pamper session because there are a lot of ways you can make sure you’re looking after yourself and your mental health too. It doesn’t only help you on the outside, self-care can make you feel content and great on the inside.

Self-care ideas:

• Keep up communication with friends/family/loved ones through text or a phone call
It’s super important to check in with people now more than ever.

• Avoid overexposure to the media/news
Constantly watching/reading the news can actually do more harm than good. It can become frightening and fake news can mislead you.

• Pick up a new hobby
Make a list of things you’d like to learn, whether it’s baking, gardening, makeup or hairstyle, now is a great time to start and perfect a skill!

• Bake/cook something new
Go the extra mile and experiment with your culinary skills and cook that dish you’ve always want to make.

• Indulge in a good book
Reading allows you to escape into a whole new world. I absolutely love reading albeit I don’t read as much as I used to. Ever started a book but never got around to finishing it? Now’s the time.

• Movie Marathon
At the moment I’m doing a Marvel Marathon, with 23 films I probably would have watched them in the completely wrong order if I didn’t know any better. Pick a genre or a few films you haven’t seen, sit back and relax.

• Stretch daily
Stretching helps you to relax and feel not so stiff. Sitting and lying down all day does not help. It’s important to stretch and keep good circulation throughout the body.

• Take up yoga or working out
Self-isolation does not mean you can’t keep fit or start working out. One of my goals is to start training at home in order to get the body goals I want. If working out isn’t your thing try pilates or yoga, YouTube videos or apps on your phone are great for finding a starting point.

• Create a morning and night routine
Keeping a routine is important, otherwise it’s easy to slip and get lazy.
Make a skincare or body care routine and stick to it.
It doesn’t have to be a skincare routine, for example, a night routine might include:
Wash face
Get dressed for bed
Listen to a podcast/play a relaxing playlist
Write a journal/read a few chapters of a book

• Express gratitude/manifest
Ever heard about the Law of Attraction? I’m an avid believer of speaking it into existence. Saying what you’re thankful for attracts more things to be thankful for.

• Compliment yourself
Go easy when judging yourself and being critical. Instead of dwelling on the things you didn’t get around to doing, compliment on the things you did do. If you did nothing but watch films or a series, it still deserves a compliment.

• Give yourself a mani/pedi/facial or foot spa
This is actually relaxing even though you’re doing it yourself.

• Digital de-clutter
Clear out your camera roll and organize it into albums. Trust me when I say it’s so much easier when you’re trying to find a good #throwback pic.
Do the same for apps and delete the ones you don’t need and don’t use.
If you’re really organised, make playlists!

• Put your mental health first
I don’t think this one needs any explanation.
